Alongside the Open University, The Consumer's Association, Which magazine and the Young Foundation, Michael Young founded the School for Social Entrepreneurs. 10 years on and Dartington is now the 10th School to be established in the UK, bringing the ethos of this great man full circle, by returning to the Dartington Hall home where he spent his childhood.
The third ‘Start-up Fellowship course' is due to begin at the end of March, and in this time of economic upheaval and great social change, we are keen to support Devon residents to achieve remarkable things by finding creative solutions to intractable social problems. The School for Social Entrepreneurs will help them take the risk, shape their ideas and be part of everything that is changing the world for the better.
Our School provides training and opportunities to enable people to use their creative and entrepreneurial abilities more fully for social benefit. In their ambitions to set up new social enterprises, social entrepreneurs have a lot in common with their business colleagues. They build something out of nothing; they marshal resources - sometimes form the unlikeliest places - to meet their needs. And they are not afraid to make mistakes.
This six-month personal and professional learning experience emphasizes practical knowledge, guided experiment and the development of business start-up skills. No lecturers, no textbooks - the programme provides instead a unique combination of personal tuition and support, expert mentoring, group sessions, site visits and a constant emphasis of learning by doing. There are no formal qualifications and students can be any age from 18+.
We would really like to get the message out to Devon's remarkable people! Somewhere, out there, is a person who could change lives and communities or create a ground-breaking organization that could achieve great things.
